I became increasingly interested in film during my junior year while taking a broadcast journalism class. I produced news packages, anchored part-time, and I was a co-scriptwriter for our weekly news broadcast. With these new skills and a deeper appreciation of video, I began using my free time to produce short videos of local marches and protests in my city of Sacramento. The videos are meant to be educational, meaningful, and calls to action. When words are not enough, I turn to the power of visual storytelling to express myself and my concerns.
Society has conditioned young people to believe that our voices are incapable of making change. We often shy away from subjects like racism, mental illness, and poverty because we don’t feel like we are old enough or powerful enough to make a difference. I’d like for viewers to learn something new from my videos, and then to feel empowered by this knowledge and by my actions to foster vulnerable conversations with their social circle about the causes and potential solutions to this issues that they care most about.
