I first got into film my junior year. I made a last minute decision to take Cathedral’s film class which I’d actively avoided until then. After anxiously engulfing film over the last two years, I’ve recognized that I have a natural understanding of “filmology,” and a unique sense of how to use film language. This realization has caused a complete shift in self understanding and identity—I now deeply value self-expression and see myself as a visual storyteller.
As an artist in visual storytelling, I hope to stimulate the inner life of the viewer to encourage them to create meaning and recognize that they are artists of their own life. I believe that being an artist is synonymous with living—to perceive, create and grow. Above all, I want to be honest and truthful in my process. It doesn’t matter if our stories are understood or accepted— if our work is a product of our originality and brought about truthfully, and if it evokes feeling or emotion in at least one person, then that is enough. In the same way that this makes for a meaningful story, it also makes for a meaningful life.
